Oculus Medium small prints

"Oculus Medium" is a new, amazing virtual reality sculpting tool. You can sculpt in and around it...it can be the size of a shoe or blown up to a bus. I printed two Oculus Medium sculptures, very small and at medium quality. They are just tests and one day I will print them larger and higher detail, I just couldn't wait 10 hours ;)  I did learn that printing such detail at small sizes isn't good, lots of hairs and removing the support structure was a crazy challenge.

Week One: 3D printing

I Love 3D printing!!  I'm a super noob but still feel like I got some great prints. My current goal is to print to get a clay look and feel... The models below are printed on a Monoprice V2.1, medium quality, Inland gray PLA, Acetone dipped for 25 sec. (gray only, killed my red prints).

I'm still learning the finer points of cleanup as well...

Zbrush Sculpt, mesh issues are in the mesh not the print. It was a one off doodle so I'm not worried about the issues.

3D printing tests: acetone on PLA prints

**UPDATE!   Don't try this on colored filaments, it just strips the color and leaves a white film.

Finally entered the 3D Printing world... I'm REALLY impressed with the quality of prints from this printer!  I'm now obsessed with getting the smoothest results, here are some test results. I'm a 3D printing NOOB, so don't use this as a guide. also, do it outside :)

Smoothing using Acetone is normally an ABS technique, but after seeing some youtuibe vids I had to try it on PLA. Acetone actually seems to help remove the shininess from the small lines, I want a more clay like finish so I'm psyched. The prints below are a frog thing I made in Zbrush, a 3Dscanned crystal and 3D scanned (from clay) worm from my game iOmoon.

Printer: Monoprice Select 3D V2.1

Filament: Inland 1.75 PLA

Temp: 205 nozzle 50 bed

software: Cura IIIP

Acetone dip time: 30sec. each (Held models completely in acetone)

Acetone: Standard acetone from Lowes

Oculus Medium Sculpt

I can't wait until we can share these in VR, 2D screenshots don't do the tech justice.

"My second Oculus Medium sculpt, realized its easier to sculpt in color rather than painting the blank mesh after. What a great tool!" by Drew Medina / Headtrip Games

20min. Pinball controller using Razer Hydras

Make a Pinball controller with Razer Hydra!

UPDATED:  Second controller setup added below, using the digital buttons as flippers, which feels much better as well as a better plunger pop.  The Hydra triggers are wonky and not as reliable.

I love PinballFX2 in VR, it's AMAZING if you like pinball games. I don't have to fiddle with the best table view modes... its like a real machine!  I was inspired by Jeremy Williams article on DIY pinball controllers, I had to make one...but RIGHT NOW DAMMIT. The important part was the software used to map the Hydras to the xbox controls. More about that below...

I started digging around in my controller box, there they were... calling me back.

Razer Hydra controllers

The split design let me use the buttons from each one, one for each flipper. I found some packing materials.  yeah it looks bad, but in 20min. I had a functional controller with a really cool plunger.

I poked some holes in the sides of the packing and slid each controller in, Analog facing. yeah, a real box would be better.  This fits everything inside with just the USB wire coming out. Awesome.

Finished.  An engineering marvel...waiting for Apple to call.

Playing PinballFX2 in the Rift..the clay containers added some weight. Really fun when you get into VR, none of the looks matter!

PC setup:

Get the 32bit http://www.x360ce.com/

1. make sure your Hydra is plugged in, I didn't install the Hydra software but if you have trouble try installing them.

2. Install the x360ce app into the PinballFX2 install folder, in your Oculus directory.

3,. Run it, create the .dll when prompted.

4. Do the auto setup, worked really well for me.

Setup A: Trigger buttons on Hydra settings: they are a bit wonky sometimes, hardware wise.

Setup B:  Using the Smooth numbered digital buttons as flippers, analog pull back on Right hydra as the plunger, much better!

5. Save the configuration and close the app, each time you play you should hear a system bell, that's the software doing it's thing.

*The analog flippers act strange, I use the square buttons.  Still looking into it..

No matter how you set up the box, using hydras and software seems to be the easiest way to start. Fun Stuff until I get a real one going! - Drew

iOmoon is now available in the Oculus store and STEAM!

iOmoon is now available!

(pc - Oculus rift)

Get it in the Oculus store and on STEAM for the RIFT virtual reality HMD!

Get it by putting on your Rift (EARLY ACCESS) or if you like Steam get it HERE

It's been two years working towards this day, can't be more proud.  iOMoon will continue to evolve, so check back here for update information. I intend to post version details here, new area info...there's so much cool stuff to create still and with your support I can go nuts!  I hope you enjoy exploring iO!

VR is so new, and we would love your feedback!

THANK YOU!  -Drew Medina

Hints & Tips

- In iOMoon, You are a brain in a pod. You're brain has been removed and placed in the pod, to explore without the unnecessary body.

- Your Photos are saved in your C: drive, top level in "iOMoon_Photos".

- Play with headphones only, the audio is SERIOUSLY 3-D, so you will miss it if you don't.

- There are multiple paths in iOMoon, don't assume you've seen it all with more to be found in the future ;)

- Keyboard keys 1-5 control smooth movement speeds as well as in probe levers.

- Like your scifi stuff in Black and white?  try the B keyboard key.

- the spacebar or gamepad B button reset your camera, if you get turned around or angled.

- You can reset your 'brain' or head position to wherever you like in the pod, lean forward and reset then lean back in your chair... or do the opposite and ride the windshield.  You can also stand and play, which can be even more immersive.

- If you get in a tough spot, use your teleport and Boost button to try to get out or to stabilize yourself somewhere slippery.

- You can use rocks and probes as shields.

- There are auto save points along the way, you can come back later and jump right into an area you've already discovered or Resume where you left off.

From the STEAM early access description:

Why Early Access?

“Hello, My name is Drew Medina. I've been working in game development for 17 years, and when I tried Virtual Reality I knew I was in. Two years ago, I tried a DK1 and fell in love... I had to make something amazing for VR, I HAD TO! I left an amazing studio position having worked on GTAV and MaxPayne3 in order to create something personal, from my creative heart. I was able to secure a few years funding, to get the most of iOmoon created, and Ive worked on it almost everyday since. I want to send you there to explore this weird, new alien world! I need your help to fulfill my vision and yours of true Sci-Fi fantasy exploration in Virtual Reality.
The goal was always to get the very best talent involved, but I didn't have the budget to do that. Although, I was able to secure one of the greatest Musical talents in gaming, Garry Schyman. Garry has created the soundtracks for "Bioshock 1,2,3" as well as "Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor".
I've worked my entire career as an environment artist as well as lead artist on many AAA titles and as studio Art Director at a major studio. These past few years on iOmoon, I've happily taken on the role of many people... Creative director, Artist, scripter , designer, audio engineer... What I would truly love to do (with your help) is continue my work and have the ability to hire super talented people to continue to evolve iOmoon' animation, fx and game mechanics. I already have a creative partner who has given his unpaid time to act as my producer, designer and QA lead.
I also need to support my family along the way! If I can stay out of the offices, I can continue to make iOmoon just as insane and awesome as possible. :) Thank you!!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The plan is to keep adding new content and evolving the current experience for the next 6-8months depending on the support we earn.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will be an evolved experience based on feedback, people's experiences and stories as well as many things I need to get from out of my head and into the experience.
As an example, I would love to send an update out one day where an entirely new area has been discovered from space, and its your mission to return to iO to find and explore it. Who knows maybe you will be the first to find and photo it ;)
There will be many more forms of lifeforms and situations involving organic materials, more gooey stuff... more weirdness! I have many areas and ideas still in my sketchbook waiting to be created.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“iOmoon is currently in a very stable, playable form that's full of content, music and immersive gameplay. The main development is done, the major areas, controls, music, and bulk of the main map.
iOmoon runs smoothly on the Rift, as well as full of 3D audio and FX. iOmoon has always been developed for Virtual Reality and will not be playable outside of VR.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The pricing of the Early Access and final version will be the same, as well as looking forward to future discounts and promotions.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Virtual Reality is so new that YOU are needed to help us evolve and grow it. I need direct feedback from players/testers from the technical aspects to emotional feedback. How you felt is as important now to how it played. I support most standard modes of locomotion in iOmoon, and will love to see them evolve. It's INSANELY important for all VR developers to listen to the audience with direct feedback on comfort and immersion. You are key to this!
Thank you!!”

Former Rockstar Games Art Director Signs BioShock Soundtrack Composer for Sci-Fi Adventure VR Experience

PRESS RELEASE
Former Rockstar Games Art Director Signs BioShock Soundtrack Composer for Sci-Fi Adventure VR Experience

Industry Veteran Drew Medina has signed Composer Garry Schyman to create the original score for the sci-fi adventure VR experience "iOmoon" being produced by Drew’s studio Headtrip Games.

(Boston, Mass) –(Headtrip Games) Award winning composer Garry Schyman (BioShock®, BioShock 2®, and BioShock Infinite®, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor®, Destroy All Humans!® Series-Credits-) has contracted with the new indie studio Headtrip Games, founded by Drew Medina (Grand Theft Auto V®, Max Payne 3®, Tomb Raider: Legend® -Credits-), to create a one of a kind soundtrack for the virtual reality adventure experience/game, "iOmoon".

Considering Garry's last few projects were with large game studios and established technology, it is interesting he has chosen to work both in a newer gaming technology, VR, and with a start-up indie studio, Headtrip Games. So, what are Garry's feelings? "I think VR represents the future of gaming.  The technology is spectacular and is only going to get better and better. ...The team [Headtrip Games] showed me a demo of their game and I was floored!  It’s spectacular and I was hooked.  Plus they are great people who are extraordinarily talented and who wouldn’t want to work with folks like that." (See Garry's recent Reddit AMA here)

"iOmoon" is a virtual reality adventure experience being created by Drew Medina and his studio, Headtrip Games. The studio's website describes iOmoon as "an immersive Virtual Reality experience in development for the Oculus Rift®, and other virtual reality headgear. It's an amazingly immersive experience where you pilot a probe into iO  ...Hot steamy caves precede burning red hot lava flows, while not too far away awaits liquid filled caves and pools of exotic liquids. You will have the opportunity to explore like no game has before, you are there in virtual reality."

For more information visit Headtrip Games.
